NDPHC Plans Additional 1,500MW Supply For Lagos

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) says it is prepared to supply an additional 1,500 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Lagos State as part of efforts to bridge the widening power demand gap in the state.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NDPHC, Engr. Jennifer Adighije, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), Mrs. Temitope George, in Lagos.

Adighije said the company currently has about 2,000MW of stranded generation capacity that could be deployed if operational and infrastructure constraints are addressed. She noted that Lagos currently receives only about 1,000MW from the national grid, despite having an estimated electricity demand of nearly 12,000MW.

According to her, the supply shortfall presents both a challenge and an opportunity for strategic investment and collaboration within the power sector.

“Our mandate is fundamentally to scale up power generation alongside the associated transmission and distribution networks,” she said.

She added that NDPHC is uniquely positioned in the power value chain, with operations spanning gas supply, generation, transmission, and distribution.

Adighije also noted that the company owns some of the largest generation assets in sub-Saharan Africa, with an installed capacity of about 4,000MW, although only 400MW to 500MW is currently dispatched daily due to operational limitations.

She explained that the recently published Lagos Electricity Market Report highlighted the significant demand-supply imbalance in the state, which NDPHC is now eager to help address through partnership with LASERC.

“This is the role we want to play. That is why we are engaging with LASERC to support the scaling and acceleration of distributed access to electricity in Lagos State,” she said.

She further stated that Lagos presents a viable and attractive electricity market, adding that the company is now focusing on investments with clear pathways for returns.

In response, LASERC Managing Director, Mrs. Temitope George, welcomed the collaboration, describing NDPHC as a key player in Nigeria’s power sector with existing investments in Lagos.

She expressed optimism that the partnership would help close infrastructure gaps and improve electricity supply reliability for residents in the state.
