Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has commissioned a free internet facility at the Federal College of Education, Okene, in Kogi State, as part of efforts to bridge the digital divide and enhance access to quality education in her senatorial district.
The project, which provides unrestricted Wi-Fi access across the campus, is expected to benefit thousands of students and staff by enabling digital learning, research, online resources, and improved connectivity.
Speaking during the commissioning, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasised that access to reliable internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity for modern education. She noted that many students in the institution had previously struggled with poor network coverage and high data costs, which hindered their academic performance.
The senator said the initiative was designed to support teaching and learning, promote research, and prepare students for a digital economy. She added that the facility would remain free for all bona fide students and staff of the college.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan also revealed that similar digital infrastructure projects would be extended to other tertiary institutions and secondary schools within Kogi Central Senatorial District in the coming months.
The Provost of the Federal College of Education, Okene, welcomed the intervention, describing it as a landmark contribution to the institution’s development. He noted that the free internet service would significantly boost e-learning initiatives and help the college compete favourably with other institutions.
The development has been welcomed by students and education stakeholders, who say it addresses a long-standing challenge in one of Kogi State’s major tertiary institutions.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan represents Kogi Central in the Senate and has consistently focused on education, youth development, and digital inclusion as key pillars of her legislative intervention in the district.
This latest project adds to several infrastructure and empowerment initiatives she has executed since assuming office, including classroom blocks, ICT centres, and scholarship programmes for indigent students.
