Man Shot Dead In Ondo After Confronting Four-Man Robbery Gang
A technician was shot dead after confronting armed robbers in Akure, while police arrested one suspect and intensified efforts to apprehend other fleeing gang members.
The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of a 47-year-old technician, Mr Idris Clement, who was allegedly shot dead by suspected armed robbers during an attack on his residence in Akure.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday when a four-man gang reportedly invaded the Shagari area of the Ondo State capital, attacking residents and carting away valuables before storming Clement’s home.
According to reports, the robbers had earlier targeted other houses in the neighbourhood before forcefully gaining access to the victim’s residence.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said one suspect had been arrested and was assisting investigators at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.
“We have arrested a suspect in connection with the violent attack on residents of the Shagari area and the killing of the technician. The suspect is currently in our custody and is assisting the police with the investigation,” Jimoh said.
He assured residents that the command was determined to ensure justice, adding that efforts were ongoing to apprehend other members of the robbery gang who remain at large.
According to him, a comprehensive investigation has commenced and all those found culpable will face prosecution.
Speaking after the incident, the deceased’s son, AbdulFatai Clement, said the robbers had already attacked two houses before invading their family home.
He explained that his father confronted one of the attackers in an attempt to protect his family, unaware that the gang was heavily armed.
The assailants allegedly attacked him with axes and cutlasses before one of them shot him. Although he was rushed to the hospital, doctors later confirmed him dead after he reportedly lost a significant amount of blood.
The victim’s widow, Mrs Taibat Clement, appealed to the Ondo State Government and security agencies to ensure that everyone involved in the attack is arrested and prosecuted.
The police said investigations are continuing as efforts intensify to track down the remaining suspects.
