NAF Officers Allegedly Beat Lagos Bus Driver to Death After Road Collision
A commercial driver reportedly died after an altercation involving Air Force personnel in Lagos, prompting calls for accountability as family members seek justice over the incident.
A 43-year-old commercial bus driver, Joseph Okpe, has reportedly died after he was allegedly assaulted by officers of the Nigerian Air Force following a traffic-related dispute along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred on May 9, 2026, has sparked concerns over the conduct of security personnel and renewed calls for justice from the deceased’s family.
According to court documents, the victim’s brother, Innocent Okpe, deposed to an affidavit before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in the Maitama Judicial Division, detailing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In the affidavit, Innocent alleged that his brother was operating his commercial bus along the busy expressway when he became involved in a minor traffic incident with personnel of the Nigerian Air Force travelling in a Coaster bus bearing registration number GO 1-14AF.
The document stated that an argument reportedly followed the collision before the Air Force personnel allegedly descended on the driver and physically assaulted him.
Witnesses at the scene were said to have intervened in an attempt to calm tensions. According to the affidavit, some passersby reportedly offered N50,000 as compensation to the Air Force personnel in an effort to resolve the dispute and prevent further confrontation.
However, the situation allegedly escalated, leaving the commercial driver with severe injuries.
The affidavit further claimed that after the incident, the Air Force personnel left the scene and continued their journey while the injured driver was rushed for medical treatment.
Family members alleged that efforts to secure urgent medical attention were frustrated as several hospitals reportedly declined to admit him.
The victim was eventually taken to Charing Cross Clinic in Mushin, Lagos, where medical personnel reportedly pronounced him dead at about 5 p.m. on the same day.
The incident has generated public concern, with relatives demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the driver’s death.
The family maintains that those responsible should be identified and held accountable in accordance with the law.
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official public response to the allegations contained in the affidavit.
The case is expected to attract further legal scrutiny as the deceased’s family pursues justice and accountability over the tragic incident.
