Manhunt Launched After Nigerian Escapes From Prison Van in London
London police have launched an intensive search for Temitope Segun, a Nigerian national who escaped from a custodial transport van, urging residents to report sightings and avoid confrontation.
The London Metropolitan Police have launched an urgent manhunt for a 25-year-old Nigerian national, Temitope Segun, who escaped from a custodial transport van in South East London on Monday evening.
The escape, which occurred on June 8, 2026, has triggered a major security operation across parts of the city as police intensify efforts to locate and apprehend the fugitive.
According to authorities, Segun was last seen near Woolwich High Street in the Plumstead area at approximately 6:40 p.m. shortly after escaping from the prison transport vehicle. At the time, he was reportedly dressed in a black jacket, black trousers and black trainers.
The Metropolitan Police have issued a public appeal for information regarding his whereabouts and warned residents not to approach him if sighted. Instead, members of the public have been advised to contact emergency services immediately.
Detective Sergeant Claudine Manning, who is leading the investigation, said officers are working tirelessly to track down the escapee and ensure he is returned to custody.
“My team of dedicated officers are working around the clock to trace and apprehend Temitope Segun,” Manning said.
Police have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding the escape or the offences for which Segun was being transported. However, authorities confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine how the incident occurred and whether any security lapses contributed to the escape.
The search operation has involved officers from multiple units, including local policing teams and specialist investigators. Patrols have also been increased in surrounding neighbourhoods as part of efforts to locate the fugitive.
Residents in Plumstead, Woolwich and nearby communities have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that may assist the investigation.
The Metropolitan Police reiterated that public safety remains a priority and assured residents that every available resource is being deployed to secure Segun’s arrest.
The incident has drawn significant attention due to the rarity of escapes from custodial transport vehicles in the United Kingdom. Authorities have pledged to provide further updates as the investigation progresses and the search continues.
