Labour Party Would Win Abia Election Held Today, Says State Chairman
Abia Labour Party Chairman Peter Azubuike says the party would comfortably win if an election were held today, attributing the confidence to its strong grassroots structure, resolved internal issues and widespread support across the state.
The Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Abia State, Peter Azubuike, has expressed confidence that the party would record a landslide victory if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted an election today, citing its strong grassroots presence across the state.
Speaking with journalists at the party's state secretariat in Umuahia, Azubuike said the LP had resolved its internal disagreements and was now fully united ahead of the 2027 general elections. He maintained that the party remained the dominant political force in Abia and was well positioned to retain its influence in the state.
According to him, the party's widespread acceptance is reflected in its electoral strength, including its control of 17 local government chairmanship positions, 184 councillorship seats and 20 members in the Abia State House of Assembly. He argued that this grassroots structure gives the Labour Party a clear advantage over its rivals.
Azubuike also defended the party's decision to adopt the direct primary system for selecting candidates, saying the approach would promote transparency, fairness and internal democracy ahead of the elections. He dismissed claims that only one nomination form had been sold in some constituencies, insisting that the process remained open and credible.
The state chairman urged members to remain united and continue mobilising support across communities, expressing optimism that the Labour Party would build on its previous electoral successes and secure victory in the 2027 polls.
