Jigawa Residents Say Subsidy Removal Impoverished Nigerians, Back Atiku
Some Jigawa residents have expressed support for ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar’s promise to restore fuel subsidy, saying subsidy removal has worsened economic hardship for ordinary Nigerians. Atiku made the pledge during his first media chat after the 2027 campaign season officially opened.
Some residents of Jigawa State have backed the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, over his promise to restore fuel subsidy, saying its removal has worsened economic hardship for Nigerians.
The residents expressed their views in discussions at markets, motor parks, tea joints and on social media following Atiku’s declaration during his first media chat after the Independent National Electoral Commission lifted the ban on campaigns for the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku had said he would restore the fuel subsidy if elected, arguing that its removal had placed an excessive burden on ordinary Nigerians.
“I will restore fuel subsidy because the current removal has failed the masses. You cannot punish the poor in the name of reform,” he said.
Some residents who spoke on the issue said the removal of the subsidy had contributed to higher transportation costs and increased prices of food and other essential commodities.
They argued that the economic difficulties experienced by households had made it increasingly difficult for many families to meet their basic needs.
One resident said the increase in petrol prices had affected virtually every aspect of daily life, particularly transportation and the cost of food.
Another resident, however, noted that any decision to restore the subsidy should be accompanied by measures to prevent corruption and ensure that the benefits reached ordinary Nigerians.
The renewed debate over fuel subsidy comes as political parties begin their campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku's proposal has also drawn criticism from supporters of the Federal Government, who maintain that subsidy removal is necessary to reduce government expenditure and redirect resources towards development.
