FG Resumes Fresh Evacuation of Nigerians from South Africa Amid Xenophobia
The Federal Government has resumed the evacuation of Nigerians from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks. Authorities say the exercise is aimed at safely returning all registered citizens who wish to leave the country despite earlier logistical setbacks.
The Federal Government has resumed the evacuation of Nigerians stranded in South Africa as renewed xenophobic attacks and anti-immigration protests continue to threaten the safety of foreign nationals.
The latest evacuation exercise follows the successful return of earlier batches of Nigerians who opted to leave the country voluntarily. Government officials said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that all registered citizens willing to return home are safely evacuated before the June 30 deadline announced by anti-immigration groups.
According to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), the new phase of the exercise is being coordinated in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and designated airlines. Authorities assured affected citizens that arrangements are being made to complete the evacuation despite earlier logistical challenges that delayed some flights.
The evacuation comes amid growing fears over escalating anti-foreigner sentiment in South Africa, where several immigrants have reportedly been attacked or displaced in recent weeks. Humanitarian organisations and community leaders have continued to call for greater protection of foreign nationals while urging calm.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians abroad, urging those affected to remain in contact with the Nigerian High Commission and follow official instructions throughout the evacuation process.
