The Federal Government has commended the University of Ibadan (UI), the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and other Nigerian universities for their improved performance in the latest world university rankings, describing their achievements as a boost to the country's higher education profile
The Federal Government has applauded the University of Ibadan (UI), the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and other Nigerian institutions for their impressive showing in the latest global university rankings, hailing the development as a reflection of the country's growing impact in the global academic community.
The government noted that the recognition of these institutions on the world stage was a clear testament to the dedication, hard work, and resilience of Nigerian academics, researchers, and students, despite the various challenges confronting the higher education sector.
In a statement, the Federal Government congratulated the management, staff, and students of the affected universities for their outstanding performance and called on them to sustain the momentum to ensure further improvement in subsequent global rankings.
The government also commended other Nigerian universities that featured in the rankings, noting that their inclusion underscored the significant strides being made by the country's higher education institutions in research, teaching, innovation, and global engagement.
According to the government, the improved rankings demonstrate that Nigerian universities, with the right support and reforms, can compete favourably with their counterparts across the world and contribute meaningfully to global knowledge production.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to continuously support the country's higher education sector through increased funding, policy reforms, infrastructure development, and the promotion of research and innovation.
It assured stakeholders in the sector that ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening university governance, improving learning environments, supporting research, and enhancing the welfare of academic staff would continue to be implemented to position the country's institutions for greater achievements.
The government urged Nigerian universities to leverage their performance in the rankings to deepen international collaborations, attract more research grants, foster academic exchanges, and elevate the standard of teaching and learning across their campuses.
It also called on the private sector, alumni associations, philanthropists, and development partners to increase their support for the country's universities, stressing that funding higher education remains a shared responsibility critical to national development.
The Federal Government further commended the regulatory and oversight role of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other relevant agencies in supporting the development of the country's higher education sector.
It encouraged the universities to maintain high standards of academic excellence, ethical research practices, and effective governance, noting that such principles are essential for sustaining their reputation in the global academic community.
The latest world university rankings have continued to generate widespread reactions across the Nigerian academic community, with stakeholders calling for sustained investment, deeper reforms, and a more enabling environment to support the country's institutions in their quest for global competitiveness.
The improved performance of UI, UNILAG, and other Nigerian universities is also seen as an encouraging signal for prospective international students, scholars, and partners considering academic collaborations with Nigerian institutions.
The Federal Government expressed optimism that with sustained commitment, Nigeria's higher education sector would continue to produce institutions and graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to national development and addressing the country's most pressing challenges.
The Ministry of Education and other relevant agencies have been urged to continue to engage stakeholders in the sector, develop forward-looking policies, and ensure that Nigerian universities are properly positioned to compete with their global peers in the years ahead.
