FG Deploys Soldiers to Safeguard Benin Republic’s Democratic Transition
Nigeria has deployed troops to Benin Republic in a regional security support operation aimed at reinforcing stability and ensuring a peaceful electoral and post-election transition during the country’s 2026 democratic process.
The Nigerian Army has deployed troops to the Republic of Benin in April 2026 as part of efforts to support democratic stability and prevent breakdown of law and order during the country’s electioneering period.
The deployment was carried out on the directive of President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to a statement issued on Monday by Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele.
The Army said the intervention was not intended for election conduct but to provide a stabilising security presence before, during, and after the electoral process in line with regional cooperation frameworks.
Troops were deployed under Operation ATILEHIN ALAFIYA II, where they conducted patrols, monitored key locations, and maintained a visible presence across parts of Cotonou and surrounding areas in the Republic of Benin.
The Army explained that the mission aimed to deter potential security threats, reinforce public confidence, and support a peaceful democratic transition in the West African sub-region.
According to the statement, Nigerian troops were strategically positioned across critical areas, including major public spaces, to establish a layered security architecture during the electoral period.
The operation also extended to the inauguration ceremony of President Romuald Wadagni, where troops were deployed early to secure key venues and surrounding locations.
Commanders reportedly maintained oversight on the ground while mobile patrol units carried out area domination operations to enhance situational awareness and deter criminal activity.
The Army described the mission as a demonstration of Nigeria’s rapid deployment capability and commitment to regional peacekeeping efforts under ECOWAS frameworks.
It added that the success of the operation reflects the country’s leadership role in promoting democratic governance and stability within West Africa.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, commended the troops for their professionalism and conduct during the assignment, describing their performance as consistent with the Army’s core values.
Nigeria also noted that the operation further strengthens bilateral security cooperation and regional efforts to prevent political instability in neighbouring states.
