FG Bans Motorcycles, Tricycles on Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway
The Federal Government has banned commercial motorcycles and tricycles from operating on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and federal bridges in Lagos. The move is aimed at protecting the infrastructure, improving safety and ensuring proper maintenance, with enforcement set to begin immediately.
The Federal Government has prohibited the operation of commercial motorcycles and tricycles on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as part of measures to protect the newly completed road infrastructure and improve safety for road users.
The directive was announced by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, who said the restriction would take effect this week. He explained that the decision was necessary to prevent misuse of the multi-billion-naira highway and preserve its structural integrity for long-term use.
According to the Ministry of Works, the ban also applies to all federal bridges within Lagos State. In addition, indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles on the highway and bridges has been prohibited to improve traffic flow and enhance public safety. Authorities also warned against the unlawful disposal of refuse along highway corridors, describing the practice as unacceptable.
The ministry disclosed that road signs indicating the new restrictions have already been installed, while enforcement teams will be deployed to strategic locations to ensure compliance. It warned that violators would face appropriate sanctions in line with existing regulations.
Officials described the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a world-class infrastructure that requires proper maintenance and responsible use. They urged motorists and other road users to comply with the new directives to safeguard the road and maximise its lifespan.
