Democracy Day: FG Pledges to Strengthen Democracy, National Unity
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democracy, promoting national unity, and addressing national challenges as Nigeria prepares to celebrate its 27th Democracy Day.
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity, and addressing the challenges facing the country ahead of Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day celebration on June 12.
The assurance was given by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following a special Juma’at prayer organised as part of activities marking the annual observance.
According to a statement issued on Friday, the minister said the prayer session provided an opportunity for Nigerians to seek divine guidance for the nation while reflecting on their role in promoting peace, stability, and development.
“Today, we joined millions of Nigerians in offering prayers for our nation as part of activities marking the 27th Democracy Day Celebration, which occurs on June 12, 2026,” Idris stated.
He noted that the service underscored the importance of combining good governance with citizens’ active participation and support in building a stronger nation.
The minister described Democracy Day as an important occasion for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and honour individuals who made sacrifices for the restoration and sustenance of democratic rule.
He paid tribute to Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, popularly known as MKO Abiola, whose role in Nigeria’s democratic struggle remains widely recognised.
Idris said the annual celebration also offers an opportunity to acknowledge the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the commitment of citizens to constitutional governance.
According to him, the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999 demonstrate the determination of Nigerians to uphold democratic values despite various political and economic challenges.
The minister reiterated the commitment of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deepening democracy, strengthening institutions, and fostering national cohesion.
He called on Nigerians to embrace unity, peaceful coexistence, and responsible citizenship, stressing that the nation’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths.
Idris urged citizens to reject division, promote dialogue, and support initiatives that strengthen democracy and national development.
He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, stating that collective efforts and commitment to democratic ideals would help build a more prosperous and united nation for future generations.
Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day celebration will mark 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule since the beginning of the Fourth Republic in 1999.
