AbdulRazaq, Speaker Mourn Four Family Members Killed in Ilorin Building Collapse

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Speaker of the State House of Assembly Yakubu Danladi-Salihu and Senator Saliu Mustapha have mourned four members of a family who died after a three-storey building collapsed in Ilorin.

The building collapsed on Tuesday at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, beside Gogoro Mosque, in the Popo Giwa/Abemi area of Ilorin West Local Government Area.

Eight members of the same family were trapped in the rubble. Four were rescued alive, while four others died after emergency responders spent hours searching through the debris.

AbdulRazaq, who visited the injured survivors, said his administration was providing them with medical care and other necessary support to aid their recovery.

The governor commended the State Emergency Management Agency, State Fire Service, Ilorin West Local Government authorities and community volunteers for their coordinated rescue efforts.

He said the tragedy highlighted the need for strict compliance with construction safety standards and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enforcing building regulations.

Senator Mustapha also expressed condolences to the victims’ families and commended the emergency responders. He called for stricter compliance with building regulations by property owners and developers.

Mustapha further urged residents to report signs of structural weakness before they develop into emergencies.

Speaker Danladi-Salihu described the incident as unfortunate, prayed for the quick recovery of the survivors and commended the state government and rescuers for their swift response.

The Kwara State Fire Service confirmed that four people died while four others were rescued and taken for medical treatment.

Authorities said the cause of the collapse would be determined after a proper assessment of the structure.
