Canada Reach World Cup Last 16 with Historic Stoppage-Time Victory Over South Africa
Canada made history by defeating South Africa 1-0 through Stephen Eustaquio's stoppage-time winner, earning the country's first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout victory and a place in the Round of 16.
Canada secured the first FIFA World Cup knockout victory in the nation's history after Stephen Eustaquio struck deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic 1-0 win over South Africa in Los Angeles. The victory sends the co-hosts into the Round of 16 for the first time and marks a significant milestone for Canadian football.
The match appeared destined for extra time after both sides produced disciplined defensive displays and struggled to create clear-cut chances. However, in the 92nd minute, Eustaquio controlled a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area before firing a low strike into the corner, sparking jubilant celebrations among players and supporters.
Head coach Jesse Marsch praised his team's resilience, describing the players as "Canadian heroes" after they continued their impressive tournament run. The victory was also boosted by the return of captain Alphonso Davies, who made his first appearance since recovering from injury after coming on in the second half.
Canada have steadily grown into one of the tournament's surprise packages after progressing from a difficult group. Their disciplined organisation, energetic pressing and growing confidence have fuelled belief that they could challenge more established football nations as the knockout rounds continue.
The co-hosts will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston for a place in the quarter-finals, while South Africa bow out after their best-ever World Cup campaign, having reached the knockout stage for the first time.
