Burnham Promises Sweeping Devolution Reforms if He Becomes UK Prime Minister
Andy Burnham has pledged to radically devolve power from Westminster to local governments if he becomes UK Prime Minister, promising greater regional control over key sectors such as housing, transport and economic development.
Andy Burnham has pledged to carry out the most significant transfer of power from Westminster to local communities if he becomes the United Kingdom's next Prime Minister, saying the country needs a new approach to governance that gives regions greater control over their own development.
Speaking during a keynote address in Manchester, the Labour frontrunner said his administration would pursue a decade-long programme of reform aimed at decentralising decision-making and promoting economic growth across all parts of the country. He argued that power has remained too concentrated in Whitehall, limiting the ability of local authorities to address regional challenges effectively.
Burnham outlined plans to expand the powers of regional mayors and local governments, allowing them greater influence over housing, transport, skills development and infrastructure. He also proposed establishing a "Number 10 North" in Manchester to strengthen coordination between central government and regional authorities while ensuring communities outside London have a stronger voice in national decision-making.
The former Greater Manchester mayor said his vision was centred on delivering "good growth in every postcode", adding that local leaders are better placed to understand the needs of their communities. He insisted that devolving authority would improve public services, stimulate investment and help reduce long-standing regional inequalities across the UK.
Burnham's proposals come as he prepares to succeed Keir Starmer as Labour leader and Prime Minister. While supporters have welcomed his emphasis on regional empowerment, critics have questioned how the reforms would be funded and implemented.
