Bellingham Must Fight For England World Cup Starting Spot — Tuchel

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has stated that Jude Bellingham will have to compete for his place in the starting lineup at the upcoming World Cup, emphasizing that the national team now has enough depth to field multiple combinations across all positions.

Bellingham, who played a key role for England during Euro 2024, has had a more inconsistent role since Tuchel took charge in January 2025. The Real Madrid midfielder has started only four matches under the new manager and made three additional appearances from the bench, with injuries and fitness concerns affecting his availability at different stages of the campaign.

Speaking as reported by BBC Sport, Tuchel made it clear that reputation alone will not guarantee a place in the starting XI.

“Yes, he has a fight on his hands,” Tuchel said when asked about Bellingham’s role. “He is one of the starters, he knows he is one of the starters, but we have 14 or 15 potential starters.”

The England manager added that competition within the squad remains intense, with several players capable of starting in multiple positions. One of the standout performers under Tuchel has been Morgan Rogers, who has featured in 12 of 13 matches since the German coach’s arrival and played in all of England’s World Cup qualifiers.

Despite increased competition, Tuchel insisted that squad selection remains fluid, with opportunities still open ahead of the tournament. He noted that performances in training and upcoming matches will play a decisive role in shaping the final lineup.

Bellingham’s recent form has, however, been encouraging. After recovering from earlier setbacks, Tuchel praised his improved sharpness and energy, describing him as being back in a “sweet spot” physically and mentally. The midfielder also impressed in England’s recent World Cup warm-up victory over New Zealand, where he briefly captained the side after coming off the bench.

England’s midfield options remain strong, with Declan Rice expected to maintain a key leadership role as vice-captain during the tournament.

Tuchel’s remarks highlight the increasing competition within the squad and reinforce the message that selection will be based strictly on performance rather than status or reputation as England prepare for the World Cup.
