PSG Defeat Villa to Retain UEFA Super Cup, Claim Tenth Trophy in Two Years

Paris Saint-Germain have retained the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Aston Villa at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria, on Wednesday.

Desire Doue scored the decisive goal and provided the assist for PSG’s opener as the UEFA Champions League winners overcame a determined Aston Villa side.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave PSG the lead in the 22nd minute after collecting a pass from Doue before shifting the ball onto his right foot and firing a powerful effort into the top corner from about 20 yards.

The Georgian winger continued the form that saw him named UEFA Champions League Player of the Season last campaign.

Aston Villa responded before halftime through teenager Brian Madjo, who was making his first competitive appearance for the club.

After earlier wasting opportunities in front of goal, Madjo held off a defender and converted John McGinn’s cross in the 45th minute to send both teams into the interval level.

Villa threatened again early in the second half, but PSG remained composed and eventually restored their advantage in the 61st minute.

Doue broke through the offside trap before curling a controlled effort into the bottom far corner to put PSG back in front.

The French champions held on to secure another European trophy and become only the fourth club, after Real Madrid, AC Milan and Liverpool, to successfully defend the UEFA Super Cup in the modern era.

The match also marked a historic occasion for the competition, with Somali referee Omar Artan becoming the first non-European official to referee the UEFA Super Cup.

The 34-year-old was previously involved in controversy after reportedly being questioned by US officials at an airport and denied entry to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

UEFA subsequently appointed him for the Super Cup, where he delivered a composed performance with few major officiating errors.

The victory continues PSG’s remarkable run of success since the beginning of the 2024/25 season.

The Paris club have now won 10 trophies during the period, including two UEFA Champions League titles, two Ligue 1 titles, two UEFA Super Cups, two French Super Cups, one French Cup and one FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

The latest triumph further underlines PSG’s dominance in European club football and gives them another trophy at the beginning of the new European season.
