Bandits Attack Kogi School, Kill Vice Principal, Child, One Other
Bandits invaded a Kogi school, killing a vice principal, a child and another resident. Security forces repelled the attackers, while investigations and operations continue to apprehend fleeing suspects.
Suspected bandits have attacked Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu, in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing three people, including a vice principal and a six-year-old child.
The attack occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, throwing the community into mourning and raising fresh concerns about insecurity in parts of the state.
According to the Kogi State Police Command, a large number of armed bandits riding about 40 motorcycles stormed the area with the suspected intention of abducting students and residents. The attackers reportedly invaded the school premises, causing panic among teachers, students and members of the community.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Afusat, the command said the Divisional Police Officer of Kabba ‘A’ Division swiftly mobilised a joint security team after receiving distress calls from residents.
The security response involved personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Police Mobile Force, tactical units, military personnel and local vigilantes already stationed within the area.
The combined security team engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat into nearby bushes. The police said the swift intervention prevented what could have become a large-scale abduction of students and residents.
“Preliminary findings indicate that there is presently no conclusive evidence of a successful mass abduction of students or other residents. However, investigations and ongoing assessments are continuing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement said.
The police confirmed that three persons lost their lives during the attack. The victims were identified as Mr. Ganiyu Anifowose, Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School, Iluke; Mr. Sunday Jacob Alhassan, 70; and six-year-old Sunday Ayele.
Authorities also disclosed that one of the attackers was neutralised during the exchange of gunfire, while a member of the joint security team sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered sustained bush-combing operations and intensified patrols across the affected area to track down the fleeing suspects. Security agencies said operations remain ongoing as efforts continue to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among residents.
Members of the public have been urged to remain calm and provide useful information that could assist security agencies in their investigations.
