Amnesty Raises Alarm Over Sokoto Attack as Death Toll Hits 32
Amnesty International condemns Sokoto attack that killed 32 people, urging urgent investigation, civilian protection and accountability.
Amnesty International has condemned a deadly attack on Ungushi community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where at least 32 people were reportedly killed.
The attack, which occurred on Friday afternoon, also left dozens of residents injured, while several homes were reportedly set ablaze and shops looted by the assailants.
In a statement shared on its verified Facebook page, Amnesty International said the attackers invaded the community on motorcycles and first targeted a Juma’at mosque, killing worshippers.
Among those reportedly killed was Malam Aliyu, the mosque’s Imam.
The rights organisation said the attackers also blocked an escape route used by residents fleeing the community, killing several people attempting to escape.
It added that some families were still searching for relatives who remained missing following the attack.
Amnesty described the incident as part of a broader security crisis affecting communities in eastern and southern parts of Sokoto State, where repeated attacks have reportedly resulted in killings, abductions and displacement.
The organisation said the continuing violence was undermining the fundamental rights and safety of residents in affected communities.
Amnesty International called on the Nigerian authorities to immediately investigate the attack and identify those responsible.
It urged the government to ensure that suspects are prosecuted through fair judicial proceedings, stressing that perpetrators of violence must be held accountable.
The organisation also demanded urgent measures to protect communities considered vulnerable to further attacks.
It called for effective support and remedies for survivors, as well as assistance for families affected by the killings, injuries and destruction of property.
According to Amnesty, protecting civilians and ensuring accountability are essential to preventing further violence and restoring the rights of communities affected by persistent insecurity.
The organisation further urged authorities to strengthen security measures in vulnerable areas and ensure that residents can live without fear of recurring attacks.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of Sokoto State, where communities continue to face threats from armed groups.
Amnesty maintained that government authorities must move beyond condemnation and take concrete steps to protect lives, investigate attacks and ensure justice for victims.
The organisation also stressed the need for sustained intervention to address the displacement and humanitarian consequences arising from repeated attacks on communities.
