World Cup: ‘It’s Uncomfortable for Me’ – Argentina Coach Scaloni Hails Messi’s Performance

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has described Lionel Messi’s latest World Cup display as “speechless,” praising the veteran forward’s selflessness following Argentina’s 3-1 victory over Jordan in their final Group J match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The defending champions secured top spot in the group after defeating Jordan at the Dallas Stadium on Sunday, completing a perfect group-stage campaign.

Giovani Lo Celso gave Argentina the lead in the 19th minute before Lautaro Martinez doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 31st minute.

Jordan reduced the deficit through Musa Al-Taamari in the 55th minute, but Messi sealed the victory with a superb free-kick in the 80th minute after coming off the bench.

The 39-year-old started the match among the substitutes and was introduced in the 59th minute as Scaloni managed the workload of his captain ahead of the knockout rounds.

Despite playing only the final half hour, Messi made an immediate impact by scoring Argentina’s third goal and delivering another memorable performance.

Speaking after the match, Scaloni explained that the decision to leave Messi on the bench from the start was made jointly with the player.

“I spoke with Leo and we both agreed that him being substituted into the match in the second half was the best thing for today. That shows what he means to the group,” Scaloni said.

The Argentina coach admitted he struggles to find words to describe Messi’s continued brilliance.

“About Leo, I see what you all see. It’s even uncomfortable for me because he’s left me speechless,” he added.

Scaloni also highlighted Messi’s willingness to put the team ahead of his own individual achievements despite the numerous records still within his reach.

“He chose today to think about his teammates who are getting minutes rather than those numbers that so many people talk about to boost his record. That says a lot about what his teammates and the Argentina national team mean to him,” the coach said.

Messi’s free-kick against Jordan added another milestone to his remarkable career, making him the first player in football history to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has been one of the standout performers at the tournament, helping Argentina win all three group matches as they continue their bid to retain the World Cup title.

Argentina will now turn their attention to Friday’s Round of 32 clash against surprise package Cape Verde, with Scaloni urging his players not to underestimate the African debutants despite Argentina’s status as favourites.
