Man Utd Confirm Ugarte Knee Injury After Uruguay World Cup Defeat
Manchester United have confirmed Manuel Ugarte suffered knee ligament damage during Uruguay’s World Cup defeat to Spain, with the midfielder returning to England for further assessment and treatment.
Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Manuel Ugarte sustained a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay during their 2026 FIFA World Cup group-stage defeat to Spain.
The Premier League club announced the development on Sunday, revealing that the 25-year-old suffered the injury during Friday’s match in Guadalajara and is returning to England for further medical assessment.
Ugarte was forced off in the first half after twisting his knee awkwardly while attempting a tackle in the build-up to Spain’s decisive goal.
The Uruguayan international appeared visibly distressed as he was stretchered off the pitch, covering his face with his hands while receiving treatment from medical personnel.
Reports following the match suggested the midfielder could face several months on the sidelines, although Manchester United said the full extent of the injury is still being evaluated.
In an official statement, the club said: “Manchester United can confirm that Manuel Ugarte has suffered a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay in Friday’s World Cup group-stage match against Spain.
“Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale.
“Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way.”
Ugarte was initially examined by Uruguay’s medical team on Saturday before arrangements were made for him to return to Manchester, where United’s medical staff will carry out further tests to determine the severity of the ligament damage and whether surgery will be required.
The injury represents another setback for the midfielder, whose future at Old Trafford has become increasingly uncertain.
Ugarte has not featured for Manchester United since the club’s defeat to Leeds United in April under head coach Michael Carrick.
The Uruguayan joined United from French champions Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 and has made 69 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals during his time with the club.
Despite showing flashes of his defensive qualities, he has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter and has recently been linked with a possible move away from Old Trafford.
His injury also comes as a blow to Uruguay, who were eliminated from the World Cup after losing to Spain, ending their campaign earlier than expected.
Manchester United are expected to provide further updates on Ugarte’s condition after specialists complete additional examinations, while the midfielder begins his rehabilitation with the club’s medical team.
