World Cup 2026: Sebastian Beccacece Becomes Fifth Coach to Lose Job After Elimination

Ecuador head coach Sebastian Beccacece has become the fifth manager to lose his job following his country’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Ecuadorian Football Federation confirmed on Thursday that Beccacece’s contract had officially come to an end after Ecuador failed to progress beyond the Round of 32.

Ecuador’s World Cup campaign ended on Wednesday following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to co-host nation Mexico, a result that denied the South Americans a place in the Round of 16.

In a statement announcing the decision, the Ecuadorian Football Federation expressed appreciation for Beccacece and his coaching staff for their dedication throughout their time with the national team.

“The Ecuadorian Football Federation thanks Sebastian Beccacece and his team for their commitment and professionalism during the team’s participation at the World Cup,” the statement said.

Although the federation did not disclose whether the departure was a dismissal or the natural expiration of his agreement, Beccacece will no longer continue as Ecuador’s head coach.

His exit continues a growing trend of managerial changes following disappointing performances at the ongoing tournament.

Beccacece is now the fifth coach to leave his position after his nation’s elimination from the World Cup.

He joins Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman, Czechia coach Miroslav Koubek, Scotland boss Steve Clarke and South Korea’s Hong Myung-bo, all of whom departed after their respective teams failed to advance beyond the Round of 32.

Ecuador entered the tournament with high expectations after producing several promising performances in recent international competitions.

However, they struggled to find consistency during the World Cup and were ultimately outclassed by a disciplined Mexican side in the knockout stage.

The Ecuadorian Football Federation is now expected to begin the search for a new head coach ahead of the team’s preparations for upcoming international fixtures and the next World Cup qualifying cycle.

Beccacece’s departure adds to the increasing pressure on national football federations seeking immediate success at major tournaments, with several countries already opting for coaching changes after early exits from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
