Switzerland Beat Algeria 2-0 to Reach World Cup Last 16

Switzerland booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a composed 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday, ending the North Africans’ hopes of progressing in the tournament.

The Swiss side produced a disciplined performance in Vancouver and will now face the winners of Friday’s Round of 32 clash between Colombia and Ghana.

Switzerland took control of the match in the first half through the lively Johan Manzambi, whose pace and creativity proved too much for the Algerian defence.

The young midfielder burst down the left flank before delivering a low cross into the penalty area, where Breel Embolo arrived unmarked to convert from close range and hand Switzerland the lead.

Algeria attempted to respond after the interval but struggled to create clear-cut chances against a well-organised Swiss backline that remained compact throughout the contest.

The European side doubled their advantage later in the game when Dan Ndoye found the back of the net with a powerful effort that travelled through a crowded penalty area.

Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane reacted quickly but was unable to keep the ball out after failing to get a firm hand on the shot.

The goal effectively ended Algeria’s hopes of staging a comeback as Switzerland comfortably managed the closing stages to secure qualification.

For Algeria, the defeat marked the end of their World Cup campaign and continued a disappointing outing for several African nations in the knockout phase.

The Desert Warriors join Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal among the African teams eliminated in the Round of 32.

Morocco remain the continent’s only representative to have progressed beyond the opening knockout round after advancing earlier in the competition.

Switzerland, meanwhile, will head into the Round of 16 with growing confidence after another solid display built on defensive discipline and clinical finishing.

Their next opponents will be determined after the clash between Colombia and Ghana, with the Swiss aiming to continue their impressive World Cup run and secure a place in the quarter-finals.
