World Cup 2026: Mbappe Breaks Records as France Defeat Senegal 3-1

France captain Kylian Mbappe set two new records as the defending champions began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over Senegal on Tuesday night.

The Real Madrid forward endured a quiet first half as Senegal frustrated France with a disciplined defensive display.

However, Mbappe came alive after the break and opened the scoring after being denied a penalty earlier in the match. He latched onto a pass from Michael Olise before calmly finishing to put France ahead.

The goal saw Mbappe equal Olivier Giroud’s record as France’s leading all-time scorer with 57 goals.

France extended their advantage when substitute Bradley Barcola scored shortly after coming off the bench, giving Didier Deschamps’ side a comfortable lead.

Senegal responded through Mbaye, who reduced the deficit and gave the African champions hope of a comeback.

But Mbappe delivered the decisive moment late in the match, capitalising on a loose ball and firing past goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to secure the victory for France.

The second goal moved Mbappe beyond Giroud’s record and made him France’s outright highest goalscorer in history.

The strike also marked his 14th World Cup goal, making him the French player with the most goals in the tournament’s history.

Mbappe’s latest achievement further strengthened his reputation as one of football’s greatest players, with the 27-year-old continuing to break records on the international stage.

The France captain has now scored more World Cup goals than Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, adding another landmark to an already remarkable career.

The victory gives France a strong start in their title defence, while Senegal will look to recover in their remaining Group matches.
