World Cup 2026: Haaland Hails Messi After Argentine Star’s Hat-Trick
Erling Haaland has praised Lionel Messi’s remarkable World Cup display, describing the Argentine captain as extraordinary after his hat-trick helped the defending champions begin their campaign with a commanding victory.
Norwegian striker Erling Haaland has described Lionel Messi as a “madman” following the Argentine forward’s sensational hat-trick in the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening match against Algeria.
Messi inspired the defending champions to a comfortable 3-0 victory in their first game of the tournament, delivering another memorable performance on football’s biggest stage.
Haaland, who was also in action for Norway on his World Cup debut, reacted to Messi’s display through a Snapchat story posted during Argentina’s match.
Sharing a picture from the game, the Manchester City forward wrote: “Messi is a madman,” expressing his admiration for the Argentine captain’s brilliance.
The comment came shortly after Haaland announced himself at the World Cup with an impressive performance of his own.
The Norwegian striker scored twice in his country’s 4-1 victory over Iraq, finding the net in the 29th and 43rd minutes to mark a strong debut at the global tournament.
While Haaland impressed in Norway’s opening fixture, Messi once again demonstrated why he remains one of the greatest players in football history.
The Argentine forward’s three goals against Algeria helped him reach another milestone in his illustrious international career, as he matched Germany legend Miroslav Klose’s World Cup goal record and moved among the competition’s greatest scorers.
Messi’s performance also reinforced Argentina’s status as one of the leading contenders for the title as they begin their campaign to defend the trophy won at the 2022 World Cup.
The 39-year-old captain continues to rewrite records, with his latest achievement adding to a career filled with individual honours and historic moments.
Haaland’s reaction reflects the widespread admiration for Messi’s longevity and ability to continue producing decisive performances despite being in the latter stages of his career.
Both stars are expected to play major roles for their respective nations as the 2026 World Cup progresses.
