US Peace Talks Meaningless After Israeli Strike on Beirut — Iran
Iran has questioned ongoing peace talks with the United States after Israeli strikes in Beirut, accusing Washington of failing to uphold commitments amid efforts to end the Middle East conflict.
Iran on Sunday declared that ongoing peace negotiations with the United States had become increasingly meaningless following fresh Israeli airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, raising new doubts over a proposed agreement aimed at ending the wider Middle East conflict.
Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, accused Washington of failing to honour its commitments, saying the latest attack demonstrated either an inability or unwillingness by the United States to enforce the terms being discussed.
“The Zionists’ aggression against Dahieh once again showed that the United States either lacks the will to implement its commitments or lacks the ability to do so,” Ghalibaf wrote on social media.
“If you do not have the will or the ability to fulfil your commitments, then there is no point in talking about continuing down this path,” he added.
The remarks came just hours after Israel announced military strikes targeting positions linked to Hezbollah in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
The development has complicated efforts to finalise a peace agreement that US President Donald Trump recently claimed was close to completion.
Trump had suggested that a deal could be signed as early as Sunday and said the strategically important Strait of Hormuz would reopen immediately after an agreement was reached.
However, Iranian officials have continued to insist that any settlement must also address the conflict involving Lebanon and Hezbollah.
Iranian Brigadier General Mohammad Jafar Asadi warned that Israel’s latest actions would not go unanswered.
Meanwhile, reports indicated that a delegation from Qatar arrived in Tehran to help facilitate negotiations among the parties involved.
Another major issue remains Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile. Tehran insists the material should be diluted within Iran, while Washington and Israel continue to push for its removal and destruction.
Trump reiterated on Saturday that the United States would eventually secure and eliminate the enriched material once conditions stabilise.
The renewed tensions also spilled into Lebanon, where Israeli forces issued evacuation warnings for several southern villages before launching strikes in Beirut.
Lebanese authorities reported that at least three people were killed and six others wounded in the attack, while Israel said it was responding to drone activity allegedly linked to Hezbollah.
