Uruguay Frustrated as Saudi Arabia Earn Hard-Fought 1–1 Draw
Uruguay dominated but were held 1–1 by Saudi Arabia in Miami after conceding first. Maxi Araujo’s late equaliser salvaged a point in a tightly contested Group H opener.
Uruguay were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against a resilient Saudi Arabia side in their opening Group H match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday in Miami.
Despite controlling large periods of the game and registering a high number of chances, Marcelo Bielsa’s side were frustrated by a disciplined Saudi defensive display and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Mohammed al-Owais.
Saudi Arabia took a surprise lead just before half-time when defender Abdulelah al-Amri reacted quickest inside the box to poke home after Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera spilled a header from a corner kick.
The goal came against the run of play as Uruguay had earlier created several openings, including a close-range header from Federico Viñas that was expertly saved by al-Owais.
Uruguay increased the intensity in the second half, with Bielsa making key changes, including the introduction of Agustín Canobbio and Juan Manuel Sanabria, as he looked to inject more attacking urgency into his side.
The pressure eventually paid off in the 80th minute when Saudi goalkeeper al-Owais failed to deal with a routine save, allowing Maxi Araujo to pounce on the rebound and slot home the equaliser.
Uruguay, who recorded over 20 shots in the second half alone, pushed forward in search of a winner, but the Saudi defence held firm under sustained pressure.
Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte came close with a long-range effort that struck the post, while Darwin Núñez struggled to make an impact before being substituted early in the second half.
Saudi Arabia, coached by Georgios Donis, who only took charge two months before the tournament, showed strong organisation and resilience to secure a valuable point.
The result leaves Group H finely balanced after the opening round of matches, with all four teams now level on one point following Spain’s earlier 0–0 draw with Cape Verde.
Uruguay will face Cape Verde in their next group match, while Saudi Arabia will look to build on their impressive defensive display.
