World Cup: England Takes Decision on Sacking Thomas Tuchel
The FA has decided Thomas Tuchel will remain England manager regardless of the Mexico result, unless the team suffers an extraordinary collapse during the World Cup.
The Football Association (FA) has reportedly decided against sacking England manager Thomas Tuchel after the Three Lions’ Round of 16 clash against Mexico, regardless of the outcome, provided the team does not suffer an extraordinary collapse.
The decision comes as England prepare for one of their toughest tests at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, facing co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium in the early hours of Monday.
Tuchel’s side reached the knockout stage after a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice to rescue England from a shock elimination.
Despite progressing, England have faced criticism for failing to produce convincing performances throughout the tournament, prompting renewed scrutiny over Tuchel’s future.
The German coach, who succeeded Gareth Southgate, was appointed with the primary objective of ending England’s long wait for a major international trophy.
Although Tuchel recently extended his contract through Euro 2028, reports indicate that the agreement contains performance-related clauses that could allow the FA to terminate his appointment if certain targets are not met.
However, according to The Telegraph, the FA intends to retain Tuchel even if England lose to Mexico.
The report claimed that Tuchel would almost certainly have been dismissed had England been knocked out by DR Congo in the previous round, but the comeback victory has significantly eased immediate pressure on his position.
The FA is also expected to consider the difficulty of England’s potential route through the knockout stages.
Should England overcome Mexico, they are likely to face Brazil, Argentina and France in succession, making their path to the final considerably more demanding.
A defeat against any of those football powerhouses is not expected to alter the FA’s long-term plans for Tuchel.
The governing body is also believed to be encouraged by the atmosphere within the England camp.
Despite criticism over recent performances and Tuchel’s demanding coaching style, reports suggest the players remain united and supportive of the manager.
Tuchel, who guided Chelsea to UEFA Champions League glory in 2021, had previously been linked with a return to club football after the World Cup.
However, with most of Europe’s top managerial vacancies already filled, the former Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain coach is expected to remain committed to England’s project beyond the current tournament.
