UK Imposes 70 New Sanctions on Russia Over Ukraine War
Britain has unveiled fresh economic measures targeting Moscow’s energy network, military supply chains and financial channels as Western allies intensify efforts to pressure Russia into ending the conflict.
The United Kingdom has announced 70 new sanctions against Russia as part of efforts to increase pressure on Moscow over its ongoing war in Ukraine.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer made the announcement on Tuesday during a special session of the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky joined leaders of the world’s leading economies.
Starmer said the new measures were designed to weaken Russia’s ability to sustain its military campaign by targeting key areas linked to its war operations.
“Working with our G7 allies, we will continue to increase the pressure on Putin and his circle of collaborators until Russia’s war machine is brought to a halt and peace returns to our continent,” he said.
The sanctions target Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”, military procurement networks and financial systems allegedly used to avoid existing restrictions imposed by Western countries.
According to a statement from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Prime Minister’s Office, the measures are aimed at disrupting Moscow’s access to resources needed for its war effort.
More than 20 oil tankers involved in transporting Russian energy products under alternative flags are among those affected by the latest sanctions.
The UK also announced restrictions on several Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) vessels recently acquired by Russia to support an already sanctioned Arctic LNG project.
Starmer’s office said the United Kingdom had become the first G7 country to impose sanctions on those LNG vessels as part of efforts to limit Russia’s energy revenue.
The announcement came after a Russian missile and drone attack across Ukraine killed at least 11 people and damaged critical infrastructure, including a major Orthodox monastery in Kyiv.
At the summit, Starmer is expected to urge G7 leaders to strengthen support for Ukraine and pursue measures aimed at achieving what he described as a fair and lasting peace.
The UK government also announced a new agreement to supply enriched uranium to Ukraine’s nuclear power sector.
The deal, valued at about £210 million, will enable UK-based Urenco to provide fuel supplies to Ukraine’s state nuclear energy company, Energoatom, supporting power generation for the next two years.
The latest sanctions underline Britain’s continued push for coordinated international action against Russia as the conflict enters another phase.
