Tinubu Mourns Political Mentor Kola Oseni, Hails His Lasting Legacy
President Tinubu described the late Alhaji Kola Oseni as a brother, mentor and key architect of his political journey, praising his enduring legacy.
President Bola Tinubu has paid a heartfelt tribute to late elder statesman and progressive politician, Alhaji Ganiyu Kolapo Oseni, describing him as a brother, mentor and one of the architects of his political journey whose contributions to Lagos State and Nigeria would never be forgotten.
The President made the tribute in a personally signed statement released on Friday titled, “Goodnight, Alhaji Kola Oseni, Goodnight, My Brother.”
Alhaji Oseni died on July 1, 2026, at the age of 80.
Tinubu said he received the news of Oseni’s passing with profound sadness, noting that although the elder statesman had departed, the memories they shared and the legacy he built would continue to inspire generations.
He described Oseni as a visionary administrator, accomplished public servant, trailblazer, elder statesman and committed progressive whose leadership, foresight and dedication distinguished him throughout his life.
According to the President, Oseni played a significant role in shaping progressive politics in Lagos State, particularly during the Second Republic when he served as Organising Secretary of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in Lagos.
Tinubu noted that Oseni’s contributions extended beyond politics, adding that his efforts helped establish several important institutions, including the Lagos State Printing Corporation, where a central mosque was recently dedicated in his honour.
The President, however, stressed that Oseni’s greatest impact on him was personal rather than political.
He described the late politician as a trusted confidant, dependable adviser and mentor whose guidance helped shape his political philosophy and leadership journey over the years.
Tinubu said Oseni remained steadfast in promoting the ideals of progressive governance, selfless service and public accountability, adding that his unwavering commitment to the development of Lagos State and Nigeria earned him the respect of colleagues and political associates alike.
The President extended his condolences to Oseni’s family, friends, associates and members of the progressive political family, praying that God grants the deceased eternal rest and gives those he left behind the strength to bear the loss.
Tinubu concluded that Alhaji Kola Oseni’s remarkable legacy of service, integrity and dedication to nation-building would continue to live on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched.
