UK Court Remands Man Over Murder of 41-Year-Old Nigerian in London

A United Kingdom court has remanded a 32-year-old man, Maxwell Oguanaya, in custody over the alleged murder of a 41-year-old Nigerian, Taiwo Ekerin, following a fatal assault in Lewisham, London.

According to a statement issued by the Metropolitan Police, officers responded to reports of an altercation on Lewisham High Street at about 4:40 a.m. on May 24. Upon arrival, they discovered Ekerin with a serious head injury.

The victim received emergency treatment at the scene from the London Ambulance Service before being rushed to hospital. However, he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on May 30.

Police said Oguanaya, a resident of Eastfield Road in Enfield, was arrested on suspicion of murder on June 4 and formally charged the following day.

He appeared before Ealing Magistrates’ Court on June 5, where he was remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings. Authorities said he is scheduled to appear in court again on June 9.

Investigators also disclosed that a second suspect, a 34-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of murder on June 5 and remains in police custody while investigations continue.

The circumstances surrounding the altercation that led to Ekerin’s death have not yet been made public.

Meanwhile, the victim’s twin brother, Kehinde Ekerin, described the incident as an unprovoked attack during a night out. In an online fundraising appeal, he paid tribute to Taiwo as a devoted father, loving family member and friend whose death has left a deep void in the lives of those who knew him.

The appeal seeks support for funeral expenses and to provide a dignified farewell for the deceased. As of the latest update, £3,710 had been raised toward a £10,000 target.

The case has drawn attention among Nigerians in the United Kingdom, with many expressing shock over the tragic loss and calling for justice as investigations continue.
