US Mint Releases $1 Coins Featuring Trump
US Mint releases commemorative $1 coins featuring Trump as America marks its 250th anniversary in 2026.
The United States Mint has released a new $1 commemorative coin featuring President Donald Trump as part of celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary.
The coin, which went on sale Wednesday, September 2, carries Trump’s portrait on the front alongside the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “1776 ~ 2026.”
The reverse features the Presidential Seal, including the eagle, olive branch, arrows and a shield bearing the number 250 to commemorate the country’s semiquincentennial.
The coins were produced at the Philadelphia Mint and are being offered in 25-coin rolls and 100-coin bags. They have a circulating finish but were initially made available to collectors through the Mint rather than being placed into general circulation.
The Mint said 250,000 of the coins were struck on July 4 and carry a special “July 4th” privy mark. Those pieces were randomly included among the rolls and bags offered for sale.
The coins have a face value of $1 and can be used as legal tender, although collectors are paying more than their face value to obtain them. The initial prices are $61 for a roll of 25 coins and $154.50 for a bag containing 100.
Trump’s appearance on the coin has generated controversy because American currency has traditionally not featured living presidents. The last sitting president to appear on a United States coin was Calvin Coolidge, whose likeness appeared on a commemorative half-dollar in 1926.
The new coin was authorised under legislation allowing the Treasury to issue special coinage for the 250th anniversary of American independence. Officials have argued that the legislation permits the design, while critics have questioned whether the coin fits with longstanding restrictions and traditions concerning portraits of living people on US currency.
Trump’s portrait and the Presidential Seal make the new dollar particularly distinctive among modern United States coins, while the 1776–2026 inscription links it directly to the anniversary celebration.
The release gives collectors and members of the public an opportunity to obtain a coin bearing the image of a sitting American president, an unusual feature that has already attracted significant political and legal attention in recent American history.
