Troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Savannah Shield have arrested five suspected bandit informants in separate operations across Niger State as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and improve security in the North-Central region.

According to a statement by Captain Jamilu Muhammed Yahaya, Acting Media Information Officer of Operation Savannah Shield, troops recovered communication devices, cash, and other items believed to be linked to criminal activities.

In one operation conducted along the Doro axis in Wawa, Borgu Local Government Area, troops apprehended three suspected informants during a routine fighting patrol. Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the suspects were associated with a bandit group operating around Duru near the fringes of the Kainji Lake National Park.

Security personnel recovered two Tecno keypad phones, an MP3 device containing recorded propaganda and inciting messages, and a cash sum of ₦113,400. The audio materials allegedly included claims of a kidnapping operation in Kaduna State and the collection of a ₦60 million ransom.

In a separate operation, troops of the 221 Battalion arrested two additional suspects during a routine patrol near a military cantonment. Investigations suggested the suspects were gathering intelligence on the facility on behalf of criminal elements.

A search of one suspect’s mobile phone reportedly uncovered a photograph of a beheaded individual dated May 2, 2026, raising concerns about possible links to terrorist activities. Recovered items included an Android phone, a Tecno keypad phone, a motorcycle, and ₦86,100 in cash.

Military authorities said all suspects and recovered exhibits remain in custody for further investigation, while efforts continue to identify and apprehend other members of the criminal network.
