Transfer: ‘He Was Frustrated’ — Lampard Explains Why Awoniyi Left Forest for Coventry
Frank Lampard says Taiwo Awoniyi left Nottingham Forest frustrated by limited playing time and determined to play regularly.
Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has revealed that Taiwo Awoniyi’s frustration over limited playing opportunities at Nottingham Forest contributed to his decision to join Coventry City.
The Nigerian striker moved to the newly promoted Premier League club during the summer transfer window after ending last season strongly at Forest.
Awoniyi scored three goals and provided two assists in his final six appearances for the club, but struggled to secure consistent playing time throughout the campaign.
Speaking ahead of Coventry City’s Premier League opener against Arsenal, Lampard praised Awoniyi’s experience and qualities, describing him as a significant threat based on their previous encounters in the Premier League.
“Regarding Taiwo, we are familiar with his Premier League background. He has scored against my team in the past when I was at Chelsea. I have always regarded him as a significant threat as an opponent,” Lampard said.
The former Chelsea manager explained that Coventry specifically targeted Premier League experience during their recruitment, with Awoniyi fitting the profile because of his physical strength, ability to hold up play and experience at the highest level.
“When evaluating our recruitment strategy, we aimed to incorporate Premier League experience. We sought power and strength, a player capable of holding the ball up, and I believe he is immensely valuable,” he added.
Lampard also suggested that Awoniyi’s desire for regular football was an important factor behind the transfer.
“There is a reason why Taiwo left Nottingham Forest and came to us. We really like him and hope he’s going to be great for us,” the manager said.
He acknowledged that the Nigerian may have become frustrated by his limited opportunities at Forest but viewed his hunger for more playing time positively.
“Probably, he is frustrated with game time. Thus, I appreciate a player who is eager to play and secure his minutes,” Lampard stated.
He added that Coventry would work carefully with the striker as he settles into his new environment, while emphasising the value of having a player who wants to become an important figure within the team.
Awoniyi’s opportunities at Nottingham Forest were restricted during a difficult season, with competition from New Zealand international Chris Wood and Brazilian striker Igor Jesus.
The move to Coventry therefore provides the 28-year-old forward with an opportunity to rebuild his momentum and potentially establish himself as a key player in the Premier League.
Lampard will hope Awoniyi’s physical presence, experience and determination to play regularly can strengthen Coventry’s attack as they begin life in the top flight.
