Today’s Political Process Can’t Guarantee Good Governance — Sam Amadi

The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, has said that today’s political process is not structured in a way that guarantees good governance in Nigeria.

Amadi made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television, where he reflected on the conduct of political party primaries and broader democratic practices in the country.

According to him, while good governance can still emerge occasionally, the existing system lacks consistency, order, and institutional strength.

“Today’s political process cannot logically guarantee good governance. What is needed is a sense of realism,” he said.

Amadi argued that democracy, as an ideal system, requires a gradual and structured process of democratisation built on strong foundations.

“Democracy, as an ideal, requires a gradual and structured process of democratization that starts with getting the basics right. It may take time, but the foundation must be solid,” he stated.

He further noted that instability within political parties makes it difficult to establish predictable and transparent political outcomes, especially in internal party elections.

“If political parties are stable, then it becomes possible to clearly identify and even predict who the delegates are,” he added.

Amadi explained that the absence of strong internal party structures contributes significantly to the weaknesses seen in governance outcomes after elections.

He stressed that while elections remain a key feature of democracy, the quality of governance ultimately depends on how well the political process is organised and institutionalised.

His comments come amid ongoing debates about the credibility of party primaries and the broader effectiveness of Nigeria’s democratic system in delivering accountability and development.
