The Nigerian Army has detected an attempted unauthorised access to its official X account, marking the second reported cyber breach involving a Nigerian military social media account in about two weeks.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, confirmed the incident in a statement posted on the Army’s official Facebook page.

She said the Army had activated immediate technical and protective measures to secure the account, prevent further unauthorised access and safeguard the integrity of information disseminated through the platform.

The incident occurred on Saturday, with the account reportedly publishing memecoin-related updates from about 3:50 p.m. before the activity was flagged as a cybersecurity breach.

Anele said efforts were underway to fully secure the account and restore exclusive administrative control.

She advised members of the public, the media and other stakeholders to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised, misleading or unverified content posted through the affected account.

The Army also urged the public to verify information through its other official communication platforms pending the full resolution of the incident.

The development comes about two weeks after the Defence Headquarters reported that its official X account had also been compromised in a cyberattack.

The Army said it remained committed to protecting its digital communication platforms and ensuring that information released through its official channels remained accurate and authentic.
