President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to eradicating substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria, announcing plans to deploy innovative interventions to tackle the growing menace.

The President made the declaration while addressing the escalating public health and security crisis linked to drug abuse and trafficking, which has continued to undermine national development, youth productivity, and community safety across the country.

According to official statements, the administration’s strategy will leverage technology, enhanced intelligence sharing, community-based rehabilitation programmes, and stricter enforcement mechanisms to combat the production, distribution, and consumption of illicit substances.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to strengthen the operational capacity of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other relevant security and health agencies, while fostering collaboration with international partners, state governments, and civil society organisations.

President Tinubu emphasised that combating drug abuse requires a balanced approach that combines robust law enforcement with prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, rather than relying solely on punitive measures.

"The fight against substance abuse and drug trafficking must be comprehensive, sustainable, and rooted in innovation. We will not relent until our streets, schools, and communities are free from the grip of illicit drugs," the President stated.

Health and security experts have welcomed the government’s renewed focus, noting that Nigeria’s drug crisis requires a multi-sectoral response that addresses both the supply and demand sides of the problem. They stressed the need for adequate funding, data-driven policy implementation, and expanded access to certified rehabilitation centres.

The President called on all stakeholders, including parents, religious and traditional leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, and the private sector, to join forces in creating a drug-free society and safeguarding the future of Nigerian youths.

He also directed relevant ministries and agencies to fast-track the development of a national framework that integrates digital tracking systems, public awareness campaigns, and evidence-based treatment protocols to curb substance abuse.

The Presidency assured Nigerians that the administration would sustain its efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks, strengthen border controls, and implement policies that prioritise the health, safety, and well-being of citizens.

As the initiative gains momentum, attention remains focused on the rollout of the proposed interventions and their measurable impact on reducing drug-related crimes and improving public health outcomes nationwide.
