Three Die, 35 Injured as Warri-Itakpe Train Derails
Three passengers reportedly died and 35 were injured after a Warri-Itakpe train derailed, overturning four coaches. Emergency teams responded while authorities began efforts to investigate the accident.
At least three people have been reported dead and 35 others injured after a train operating on the Warri-Itakpe route derailed, with four coaches overturning during the incident.
The accident was confirmed on Monday by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, who said emergency response teams had been deployed to the scene to assist passengers and manage the situation.
According to the NRC, the affected train was operating on the popular Warri-Itakpe corridor when the derailment occurred, causing four coaches to capsize and leaving dozens of passengers injured.
While official details on the cause of the accident have not yet been released, sources indicated that three passengers lost their lives and at least 35 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Opeifa assured the public that the corporation would continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. He added that emergency personnel were working to evacuate affected passengers, provide medical assistance and assess the extent of the damage.
The Warri-Itakpe rail line is one of Nigeria’s key standard-gauge railway routes, connecting communities across the South-South and North-Central regions and serving both passenger and commercial transportation needs.
Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the derailment and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
