TETFund Described as Key to Saving Nigeria’s Higher Education Sector
Experts say TETFund remains vital to Nigeria’s tertiary education system, driving infrastructure upgrades, staff training, and research funding across public institutions.
A governance and policy expert has described the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) as a critical institution in sustaining and improving Nigeria’s higher education system, calling for stronger support to ensure it continues to meet its mandate.
The expert noted that TETFund has remained central to addressing long-standing challenges in public tertiary institutions, particularly in areas such as infrastructure development, academic staff training, and research funding.
According to the analysis, the intervention agency has played a significant role in reducing the funding gap in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country by providing structured financial support for key academic needs.
It was also observed that many institutions rely heavily on TETFund projects to upgrade classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and ICT facilities, which have contributed to improving the overall learning environment.
The expert further stressed that without sustained and well-managed interventions from the fund, Nigeria’s higher education system could face deeper structural challenges, including declining research output and deteriorating infrastructure.
He therefore called for improved efficiency, transparency, and long-term planning in the administration of TETFund resources to ensure continued impact across the education sector.
