Nigerian Govt Plans 360km/h High-Speed Rail From Lagos To Maiduguri

The Federal Government has unveiled plans for a high-speed rail line linking Lagos with Maiduguri as part of a broader strategy to transform transportation and improve connectivity across Nigeria.

The proposed railway is expected to operate at speeds of up to 360 kilometres per hour, potentially making it one of the fastest rail systems on the African continent.

The plan was disclosed during discussions on the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s transport infrastructure and provide Nigerians with more efficient alternatives for travelling across the country.

The proposed Lagos-Maiduguri corridor would connect major economic centres and communities across the southern, central and northern parts of Nigeria.

Officials said the project forms part of the government’s long-term objective of creating an integrated transportation system in which road, rail, air and water transport complement one another.

The high-speed rail is expected to improve the movement of passengers and goods, reduce pressure on major highways and potentially lower logistics costs.

The project could also strengthen economic links between regions by making it easier for businesses, workers and traders to move across the country.

Government officials said the initiative would provide Nigerians with greater choice between different modes of transportation while supporting national economic integration.

The proposal comes against the background of Nigeria’s existing efforts to expand and modernise its railway network.

The country currently operates several standard-gauge passenger rail services, while projects have been developed or proposed to connect major cities and economic corridors.

The government has also previously discussed plans for a wider high-speed rail network stretching thousands of kilometres across Nigeria.

In 2025, the Federal Government announced plans for a proposed 4,000-kilometre high-speed rail network, with an estimated investment value of about $60 billion. The project was expected to be developed in phases and connect major economic centres.

The newly announced Lagos-Maiduguri proposal would significantly extend the reach of Nigeria’s high-speed rail ambitions, particularly towards the North-East.

Officials also linked the broader transport strategy to job creation, improved safety, reduced travel times and increased economic activity.

However, a project of this scale would require substantial investment, technical expertise, land acquisition, security and long-term maintenance.

The government will also need to address financing, project delivery and operational sustainability before the proposed corridor can become a reality.

If implemented successfully, the Lagos-Maiduguri high-speed railway could significantly change long-distance transportation in Nigeria by providing faster and more reliable connections between major regions.
