Super Eagles Must Get It Right in 2030 After 2026 Heartbreak

Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has intensified calls for the Super Eagles to rebuild and ensure they return to football's biggest stage in 2030. Despite the tournament's expansion to 48 teams and Africa receiving 10 qualification slots, the three-time African champions were among the notable absentees, leaving millions of Nigerian fans disappointed.

Football analysts believe the team must learn from the shortcomings of the last qualifying campaign, particularly the instability surrounding coaching appointments and the overdependence on a handful of key players. The appointment of head coach Eric Chelle is seen as an opportunity to establish continuity, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) backing a long-term project focused on winning the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and securing qualification for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Attention has also turned to succession planning, as several of Nigeria's current stars, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon, will be in their 30s by the next World Cup. Stakeholders have urged the coaching crew to gradually integrate younger players while improving squad depth to reduce reliance on a few established names.

Beyond football matters, observers have stressed the need for better administration, including timely payment of players' bonuses and improved planning by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Former internationals have also called for greater consistency and urgency throughout the qualification campaign, insisting that Nigeria cannot afford to miss a third consecutive World Cup.
