FIFA has appointed Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić to take charge of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, making him the first official from Slovenia to referee football's biggest match. The appointment was announced on Friday, with FIFA describing it as recognition of Vinčić's consistency and outstanding performances throughout his refereeing career.

The 46-year-old, who hails from Maribor, said he was overwhelmed when informed of the decision by FIFA Chief Refereeing Officer Pierluigi Collina. Vinčić described the appointment as an "incredible honour" and said officiating the World Cup final represents the pinnacle of a referee's career.

Vinčić has built an impressive international résumé, having officiated at the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship and UEFA Champions League. During the 2026 World Cup, he has overseen three matches, earning praise for his calm decision-making and control of high-pressure encounters.

He will be assisted by fellow Slovenians Tomaž Klančnik and Andraž Kovačič, while Jordan's Adham Makhadmeh will serve as the fourth official. Germany's Bastian Dankert has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the showpiece match.

The World Cup final, scheduled for Sunday at New York New Jersey Stadium, will see defending champions Argentina face Spain in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the tournament, with Vinčić entrusted to oversee the historic encounter.
