FIFA Highlights Three Key Battles That Could Decide World Cup Final

FIFA has identified three crucial individual duels that could shape the outcome of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, with the governing body highlighting the contests as potential game-changers in the battle for football's biggest prize. The match, scheduled for Sunday in New York New Jersey, pits the defending champions against a Spanish side chasing a second World Cup title.

Leading FIFA's list is the contest between Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Spain defender Aymeric Laporte. Messi enters the final in outstanding form, leading the tournament's scoring charts with eight goals and four assists, while Laporte has anchored a Spanish defence that has conceded just one goal in seven matches. FIFA noted that containing Messi will be vital if Spain are to deny Argentina back-to-back World Cup titles.

The second battle focuses on midfield, where Spain captain Rodri will face Argentina's Enzo Fernández. Rodri has dominated possession throughout the tournament with his passing accuracy and ability to dictate play, while Fernández has been instrumental in Argentina's run to the final with his energy, creativity and crucial goals. FIFA believes the team that controls midfield could gain a decisive advantage.

The third key duel features Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal against Argentina left-back Nicolás Tagliafico. Yamal's pace, dribbling and attacking flair have troubled defenders throughout the tournament, while the experienced Tagliafico will be tasked with containing one of football's brightest young stars. FIFA said the outcome of their battle on the flank could significantly influence the final result.

With world-class talent on both sides, FIFA expects the individual contests to complement an already highly anticipated final, as Argentina seek to retain their crown while Spain aim to reclaim the trophy for the first time since 2010.
