Shettima Visits NIPSS After Attack as D-G Confirms Arrest of Suspects
Vice President Kashim Shettima visited NIPSS in Kuru following the deadly attack that killed three security personnel, as authorities confirmed arrests and intensified investigations into the incident.
Vice President Kashim Shettima on Friday paid an on-the-spot assessment and condolence visit to the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State, following the deadly attack on the institution earlier this week.
The visit came as the Director-General of the institute confirmed that suspects linked to the attack had been arrested, while security agencies continued investigations to apprehend other perpetrators.
Armed men attacked the NIPSS facility in the early hours of Tuesday, June 16, 2026, leading to a fierce gun battle with security personnel stationed at the institute.
The assault claimed the lives of three security operatives, comprising two soldiers and one police officer attached to the protection of the staff quarters.
The incident triggered heightened security concerns around the nation’s foremost policy and leadership training institution.
Accompanied by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and other senior government officials, Vice President Shettima was received at the institute by the Director-General, Professor Ayo Omotayo.
During the visit, the Vice President inspected facilities affected by the attack, including sections of the staff quarters, to assess the extent of the damage and identify security vulnerabilities.
He also received security briefings from heads of relevant security agencies on the circumstances surrounding the attack, ongoing investigations and measures being implemented to prevent future breaches.
Authorities said security around the institution had been significantly reinforced following the incident.
The Plateau State Police Command had earlier deployed additional personnel and intensified patrols around the area to strengthen protection of the institute and its residents.
The visit by the Vice President underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing security threats and supporting institutions considered critical to national development.
Government officials expressed condolences to the families of the slain security personnel and commended the bravery of officers who resisted the attackers.
Meanwhile, security agencies have continued investigations into the incident, with authorities expressing optimism that those responsible would be identified and prosecuted.
Officials said efforts were ongoing to strengthen security architecture around strategic national institutions and ensure that similar attacks are prevented in the future.
