SEDC Set to Flag Off First Agro-Mechanisation Project in Enugu to Boost Regional Food Security

The South East Development Commission (SEDC) is poised to flag off the first of its 15 flagship Agro-Mechanisation projects, marking a significant milestone in the region’s agricultural and economic revitalization. The development was confirmed by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Mark Okoye, during a pre-assessment and community engagement visit to the Nomeh Unateze community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State on Tuesday.

Established in 2024, the SEDC dedicated its inaugural year to conducting extensive, data-driven studies, ultimately designing a comprehensive masterplan to stimulate holistic growth across the South East economy. At the heart of this strategic blueprint is the South East Agro-Development Programme, a flagship initiative meticulously designed to concurrently tackle the region’s most pressing socio-economic challenges: food insecurity, youth unemployment, and rural insecurity.

Speaking to stakeholders during the site visit, Okoye outlined the ambitious scope of the programme. “What we are here for is one of our flagship initiatives... where we are committing to develop up to 50,000 hectares of land for mechanised farming across the region,” he stated. 

To ensure sustainable execution, the commission is adopting a phased, scalable approach. The pilot phase will involve the development of 200 to 300 hectares of farmland in each of the 15 senatorial zones. These sites will be transformed into standard, mechanized farms cultivating staple crops like cassava and maize, alongside high-yield cash crops. Furthermore, the project will incorporate dedicated centers for learning and productivity, aiming to equip local farmers with modern agricultural techniques and best practices.

Okoye emphasized that the immediate goal of the pre-flag-off visit was to assess the terrain, understand the requisite groundwork, and ensure that contractors can mobilize swiftly. “Once we hit the site, we start running,” he noted, adding that the official flag-off ceremony, approved by the Enugu State Governor, is scheduled for next week. 

Beyond mere agricultural output, the project is projected to serve as a major economic catalyst for the entire region. Okoye revealed that the initial SEDC capital injection is expected to attract between N4 billion and N5 billion in ancillary private and public investments. This multiplier effect will stimulate local economies, create thousands of sustainable livelihoods for youths, and significantly reduce the region's reliance on food imports from other parts of the country.

The initiative has received widespread acclaim from local leaders and government representatives, who view it as a testament to effective, data-driven governance. Uche Anichukwu, Media Aide to Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, described the agro-mechanisation project as a direct benefit of the collaborative efforts of the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Bola Tinubu, and the Mbah administration. 

Anichukwu highlighted that recent infrastructural upgrades, specifically the Nenwe-Nomeh-Mburubu-Nara road with a spur to Oduma, have created seamless access routes to markets, perfectly positioning the Nomeh Unateze community to maximize the commercial benefits of the proposed agricultural hub.

Community stakeholders echoed this optimism. Dr. Chukwudi Anyianuka, Chairman of the Nomeh Unateze Town Union Caretaker Committee, commended the federal government and the state leadership for selecting their community for the pilot project. 

“We are very, very happy. We cannot wait to see this vision actualised, and we promise to provide every necessary resource and community support to ensure its absolute success,” Anyianuka declared. He praised the SEDC’s methodical, evidence-based strategy, noting, “Rather than falling into the pitfall of arbitrarily throwing money at complex development challenges, the Commission undertook a thorough study of the region and came up with a realistic masterplan to reinvent the South East in the post-civil war era.”

Looking ahead, Okoye disclosed that the SEDC is preparing to roll out a specialized investment agency in the coming months. This new body will be strategically tasked with mobilizing local and diaspora investments to accelerate the region’s overall development trajectory. He also used the occasion to commend President Tinubu for actualizing the long-held demand of the South East for a dedicated development commission, urging residents to reciprocate the gesture by supporting the administration’s continuity and developmental efforts beyond the 2027 election cycle.

As the official flag-off approaches, the Nomeh Unateze project stands as a tangible symbol of the South East’s agricultural potential, promising to transform subsistence farming into a robust, mechanized industry capable of feeding the nation and empowering its youth.
