SEDC Flags Off 200-Hectare Agro Project in Enugu

The South East Development Commission (SEDC) has flagged off a 200-hectare agricultural development project in Enugu State, in a landmark intervention aimed at boosting food production, creating jobs, and driving economic transformation across the South East region.

The project, located in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, was formally inaugurated on Tuesday by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SEDC, Mr. Mark Okoye, who described the initiative as a demonstration of the commission's commitment to repositioning agriculture as a cornerstone of the region's economic revival. The flag-off ceremony was attended by a cross-section of stakeholders, including government officials, community leaders, farmers' associations, and representatives of development partners.

Speaking at the event, Okoye said the 200-hectare project was designed as a comprehensive agricultural hub that would integrate crop production, livestock, and aquaculture in a single, self-sustaining ecosystem. The project will feature cassava and maize cultivation on a commercial scale, alongside poultry and fishery enterprises that will provide additional revenue streams and protein sources for surrounding communities. An out-grower scheme will also be established to empower 5,000 farmers across the South East, providing them with inputs, training, and guaranteed markets for their produce.

"This project is not just about cultivating land. It is about cultivating opportunities," Okoye said. "We are building an agricultural ecosystem that will create jobs, improve food security, and demonstrate that the South East can feed itself and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria's food supply." He explained that the commission had deliberately adopted a cluster-based approach, whereby the 200-hectare project would serve as a model farm and training centre, while the out-grower scheme would extend the benefits to thousands of farmers across the region.

Okoye noted that the choice of Nkanu West for the pilot project was informed by the area's agricultural potential, its accessibility to major markets in Enugu and beyond, and the willingness of the community to participate actively in the initiative. He said the commission had already secured the necessary land and was in the process of engaging technical partners and input suppliers to ensure that the project commenced without delay.

The SEDC boss also disclosed that the commission would invest in post-harvest processing facilities, including cassava mills and maize dryers, to reduce waste and add value to the produce. This, he said, would ensure that farmers got better returns for their labour while creating a sustainable supply chain that could support local industries. "We are not just producing raw materials. We are producing finished goods that can be sold in markets, used in industries, and exported to other states and countries," he stated.

The Enugu State Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, who represented Governor Peter Mbah at the event, commended SEDC for the initiative and pledged the state government's full support for the project. He noted that the Mbah administration had made agriculture one of its top priorities under the state's economic transformation agenda, and that partnerships with federal agencies like SEDC were essential to achieving the state's food security goals.

The traditional ruler of Nkanu West, who spoke on behalf of the community, expressed gratitude to SEDC for bringing the project to the area. He pledged the community's cooperation and commitment to ensuring the success of the initiative, noting that it would provide employment opportunities for local youths and improve the livelihoods of farming families. He called on other development agencies and private investors to emulate SEDC's example by investing in agriculture in the South East.

The SEDC's agricultural initiative aligns with the commission's broader mandate to drive economic development in the South East and address the region's infrastructural and economic deficits. Since its establishment, SEDC has prioritised agriculture as a key sector for intervention, recognising that the region possesses vast arable land and a hardworking population that can be harnessed to create wealth and reduce poverty.

For the South East, the 200-hectare agro project represents more than an agricultural investment. It is a statement of intent that the region is ready to take control of its economic destiny, moving from a consumer economy to a productive one. With 5,000 farmers set to benefit from the out-grower scheme and thousands of direct and indirect jobs expected to be created, the project has the potential to transform rural livelihoods across the region.

As the flag-off ceremony drew to a close, farmers in Nkanu West were seen inspecting the cleared land and preparing for the planting season. For them, the project is not just a government programme; it is a lifeline that offers hope for a better future. As Okoye put it, "The South East is ready. We are going to feed Nigeria, and we are going to do it from here." The coming months will determine how quickly that vision becomes reality.
