Russian Ballistic Barrage Kills 14 in Kyiv on the Eve of Crucial NATO Summit
Russia hammered Kyiv with 68 missiles and 351 drones overnight, killing 14 civilians and flattening residential buildings right before a crucial NATO summit where President Zelenskyy is set to demand urgent air defense interceptors.
Russia has launched a massive, coordinated overnight missile and drone assault on Ukraine's capital, killing at least 14 people and injuring dozens more just hours before the high-stakes NATO summit begins in Ankara, Turkey.
The heavy aerial bombardment, which commenced shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Monday, deployed a total of 68 missiles, including hard-to-intercept ballistic, supersonic, and hypersonic projectiles, alongside 351 suicide drones. While Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 326 drones and 37 cruise missiles, none of the advanced ballistic weapons were neutralized due to an acute shortage of Patriot defense interceptors.
The strikes inflicted severe destruction across civilian zones, directly hitting at least 15 multi-story residential buildings. In Kyiv's historic Podilskyi district, a nine-story residential apartment block partially collapsed, leaving families trapped under burning debris. Search and rescue operations remain active, with local authorities warning that the death toll will likely rise as emergency teams clear the rubble.
Responding to the tragedy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy intensified his appeals to Western allies, stressing that the attack is direct proof that Ukraine desperately needs immediate air defense reinforcements. Zelenskyy is scheduled to discuss the crisis and potential diplomatic resolutions with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the NATO summit.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defence confirmed the massive onslaught, claiming the operations successfully hit military-industrial complexes and energy infrastructures. Concurrently, Moscow reported intercepting over 500 Ukrainian long-range drones, which targeted Russian oil-exporting hubs in the Leningrad region and sparked growing domestic fuel shortages.
