Paredes Hints Messi Has Decided on Argentina Future After World Cup Defeat

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has suggested that Lionel Messi may have already made a decision regarding his international future following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Messi captained Argentina in the tournament but was unable to retain the title as the Albiceleste suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the final. Spain secured victory through Ferran Torres’ lone goal of the match.

Despite speculation that the World Cup final could mark Messi’s final appearance for Argentina, Paredes believes the legendary forward’s international career may not necessarily be over.

Speaking in an interview shared by Sport Daily on X, the Roma midfielder said the final decision rests entirely with the Inter Miami star.

“I think he had already made the decision. I hope that is not the case, and I hope he continues playing, but the decision is his,” Paredes said.

“Whatever makes him happy will make us happy too.”

Messi remains Argentina’s most decorated player, having guided the national team to Copa América triumphs as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup title in Qatar.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has yet to publicly announce whether he will continue representing Argentina beyond the 2026 World Cup.

With international football entering a new cycle, uncertainty continues to surround the 39-year-old’s future, although fans remain hopeful that Messi will extend his illustrious career with the reigning South American champions.
