Owen Oseni Outlines Three Core Instructions Mandated by Eric Chelle During Unity Cup
Owen Oseni says Eric Chelle’s system for the Super Eagles demands intense pressing, disciplined positioning, and intelligent movement off the ball, describing his Unity Cup experience as a key tactical learning curve.
Super Eagles forward Owen Oseni has shed light on his tactical responsibilities under international manager Eric Chelle, detailing the three fundamental requirements demanded of him during the recently concluded Unity Cup in London.
The rising striker, who featured for the national side during the tournament, revealed that the head coach's pre-match briefings focused heavily on high-intensity pressing, tactical discipline off the ball, and creating space for his attacking teammates.
Oseni explained that Chelle's football philosophy requires modern forwards to be the first line of defence, forcing errors from opposing backlines before they can transition into midfield.
"The manager was very explicit about what he wanted from me on the pitch," Oseni noted, reflecting on the tactical sessions. "First, he wanted constant pressure on the centre-backs to disrupt their build-up play. Second, I was tasked with holding up the ball efficiently to allow our wingers to join the attack. Finally, he stressed the importance of structural discipline when we didn't have possession."
The forward highlighted that playing under the Franco-Malian tactician has been an educational experience, as the coaching staff demands absolute concentration and immense physical output for the duration of the match.
Despite the intense competitive pressure of the London tournament, Oseni stated that understanding these precise instructions helped him integrate more smoothly into the team's offensive setup, adding that he feels better prepared for future international assignments under Chelle's guidance.
