OOU Student Killed by Suspected Robbers as Police Launch Investigation
Police have launched an investigation into the killing of an Olabisi Onabanjo University student by suspected robbers, while the university suspended lectures to allow students mourn their colleague.
The Ogun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the killing of a student of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, who was allegedly shot dead by suspected armed robbers in the early hours of Thursday.
The tragic incident has thrown the university community into mourning, prompting the institution’s management to suspend academic activities for the day in honour of the deceased student.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Oluseyi Babaseyi, said police operatives responded swiftly after receiving reports of the attack and had immediately launched a manhunt for the suspects responsible.
Speaking with journalists in Abeokuta, Babaseyi expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and members of the university community, assuring them that security agencies were making efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
According to him, investigations are ongoing and the command remains committed to ensuring that those behind the crime are brought to justice.
“The command commiserates with the family of the deceased and the university community. Our operatives have commenced investigations, and efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects,” he said.
Meanwhile, the management of Olabisi Onabanjo University announced a lecture-free day following the unfortunate incident.
The Deputy Registrar of the institution’s Corporate Affairs Division, Niyi Oduwole, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to the statement, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, approved the suspension of lectures after consultation with the institution’s Senate.
The decision was taken to allow students, staff and members of the university community to mourn their late colleague.
The university management also extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and assured students that steps were being taken to strengthen security within and around the campus.
Oduwole stated that the institution was already collaborating with relevant security agencies to improve surveillance and enhance the protection of lives and property.
He further appealed to students to remain calm and refrain from actions capable of escalating tensions during the mourning period.
The university assured students that every necessary measure would be taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents and maintain a safe learning environment for all members of the institution.
